The theme "Where Do We Go from Here? A Legacy of Social Justice and Human Rights” paid homage to Dr. King's enduring impact as a catalyst for social change, advocating for unity and understanding amidst division.

Chef Sherry Pocknett visited Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) on November 16, 2023, as part of BHCC’s Compelling Conversations series. Moderated by Associate Vice President and Chief Equity and Compliance Officer Nahomi Carlisle, Chef Sherry shared her family's history in the restaurant business and her journey to becoming an award-winning chef and recently became the first indigenous woman to receive the James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Northeast. She emphasized the importance of following your dreams, staying true to yourself, and never giving up despite facing challenges.

BHCC’s first new building in a decade expands student services and learning commons with a climate-responsive design

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the College’s Student Success Center on Monday, officially opening the first new building in more than a decade at the state’s largest community college. 

On November 17, 2023, Bunker Hill Community College welcomed Adrienne Bailon-Houghton, a Daytime Emmy® award-winning television host, acclaimed pop vocalist, lifestyle personality, producer, and founder of the faith-based jewelry brand XIXI. In a lively Q&A, Adrienne discussed the impact of her role in The Cheetah Girls on Latina identity and embracing diversity. She emphasized the importance of authenticity, making wise decisions, and creating a new blueprint for the future while also acknowledging the influence of the Latinx community and the value of celebrating diversity. She shared, “Be authentic on social media, post what you genuinely like and love to attract like-minded people.”

The University of Massachusetts (UMass) has introduced the Community College Advantage Scholarship (CCAS), offering a minimum of $5,000 annually to the top 10 percent of future community college graduates in Massachusetts.

On Friday, December 1, 2023, 27 Be Mass Competitive Program (BMCP) graduates accepted their Certificates of Achievement.

Commonwealth of Massachusetts Performance Recognition Program Honors Three BHCC Leaders with State-Wide Honors; Nine more honored for outstanding performance

Twelve Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) employees were honored in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Performance Recognition Program—a state-wide program that formally recognizes Commonwealth employees for their extraordinary contributions to public service.

On November 27, 2023, at the University Crossing building on the UMass Lowell campus, the Dual Admissions agreement signing between Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) and UMass Lowell became official with the signatures of BHCC President Pam Eddinger and UMass Lowell Chancellor Julie Chen. Staff members from both institutions, including BHCC Provost James Canniff and UMass Lowell Provost Joseph Hartman, commemorated this significant occasion.

The Bunker Hill Community College Veterans Center commemorated the Veterans Day holiday on the Charlestown Campus on Wednesday, with more than a dozen student, alumni/ae, faculty, and staff veterans gathering to honor those who served.

Events this week promote pathways into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields 

October 16-20 is STEM week at Bunker Hill Community College, part of a Commonwealth-wide celebration organized by the Executive Office of Education and the STEM Advisory Council in partnership with the state’s Nine Regional STEM Networks. STEM Week is a statewide effort to boost the interest, awareness, and ability of all students to see themselves in STEM opportunities. Young women, students of color, English language learners, and students with disabilities continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields yet make up a larger percentage of the overall workforce.

Bunker Hill Community College kicked off its annual One Book program with a reading and book signing by Professor of English Caroline Kautsire, author of Some Kind of Girl: An African Girl Looking for America.

Joint Committee on Higher Education holds hearing at Mass. State House 

On Monday, September 18, Bunker Hill Community College President Pam Eddinger testified at a hearing of the legislature’s Joint Committee on Higher Education on behalf of legislation that would combat food insecurity on college campuses across the state. 

Recognizing excellence and access in training partnership with global IT firm

Making higher education accessible to all is at the core of Bunker Hill Community College’s mission, both in the College’s degree programs and in its Workforce Development offerings. This fall, Red Hat, the global information technology firm that specializes in open technologies for enterprise, recognized the College’s commitment with the Community & Social Responsibility in Education Impact Award at the company’s Workforce Development and Red Hat Academy Conference.

Visitors to the BHCC campuses in Chelsea and Charlestown have likely encountered members of the Bunker Hill Community College Police Department—whether walking through the lobby in Chelsea or across the main entry plaza into B-Building where the department’s headquarters sits, the BHCC Police Department’s presence is an unmistakable reflection of their mission: to protect and serve the college community and all those who come to our campuses.

MassReconnect Will Help Meet Workforce Needs, Address Economic Skills Gap, and Offer Transformative Chance at Degree for Massachusetts Adults 

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) President Pam Eddinger joined Governor Maura T. Healey on Thursday, August 24, to launch MassReconnect, the Healey administration’s new program establishing free community college for Massachusetts residents aged 25 and older, and awarded $100,000 to each of Massachusetts’ 15 community colleges to support the quick implementation of the program this fall. Governor Healey and President Eddinger were joined by Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, Senate President Karen Spilka, Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler, Commissioner of Higher Education Noe Ortega, and other community college presidents today at MassBay Community College’s Wellesley Campus. During the event, the Healey-Driscoll Administration highlighted the first MassReconnect students at MassBay, celebrating the impact the program is expected to have for students across the state.

Bunker Hill Community College President Pam Eddinger, along with Cape Cod Community College President John Cox and Roxbury Community College Interim President Jackie Jenkins-Scott, appeared on Radio Boston, public radio station WBUR’s daily local news show, to talk about the potential promise and impact of MassReconnect, the new state program that makes community colleges across Massachusetts free to Massachusetts residents aged 25 and older without a prior college degree.

Becomes second Massachusetts Community College Police Department to receive law enforcement’s highest professional certification 

Bunker Hill Community College’s (BHCC) Department of Public Safety and Campus Police was awarded Full Accreditation by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (MPAC) on June 21, making the Department one of two community college police and public safety departments statewide to receive the highest level of professional certification in the Commonwealth.

President Eddinger celebrates Charlestown Marina’s Large Marina of the Year Award and naming of Pier 6 public space in honor of former U.S.S. Constitution Commander and Charlestown native Robert Gillen. 

When Ann and Chuck Lagasse, the owners of Charlestown Marina, received the Large Marina of the Year award from Marina Dock Age Magazine, they called Bunker Hill Community College.  

Commonwealth’s first Black woman to win statewide office offers BHCC graduates message of hope and empowerment 

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) held its 49th Commencement Exercises on Thursday, May 25, with Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell addressing graduates as keynote speaker and recipient of the College’s Presidential Distinguished Service Award.  

BHCC President Pam Y. Eddinger was one of three 2023 SCI Idealist Awardees.

The award, presented by the non-profit Social Capital Inc. (SCI), was given on May 4th at District Hall Boston, where Natanja Craig Oquendo and Michael Curry were honored along with Eddinger.
