Chef Sherry Pocknett visited Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) on November 16, 2023, as part of BHCC’s Compelling Conversations series. Moderated by Associate Vice President and Chief Equity and Compliance Officer Nahomi Carlisle, Chef Sherry shared her family's history in the restaurant business and her journey to becoming an award-winning chef and recently became the first indigenous woman to receive the James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Northeast. She emphasized the importance of following your dreams, staying true to yourself, and never giving up despite facing challenges.

She shared statistics on the workforce, salaries, job opportunities, and the impact of retiring nurses on education. Events this week promote pathways into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields 

October 16-20 is STEM week at Bunker Hill Community College, part of a Commonwealth-wide celebration organized by the Executive Office of Education and the STEM Advisory Council in partnership with the state’s Nine Regional STEM Networks. STEM Week is a statewide effort to boost the interest, awareness, and ability of all students to see themselves in STEM opportunities. Young women, students of color, English language learners, and students with disabilities continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields yet make up a larger percentage of the overall workforce.

MassReconnect Will Help Meet Workforce Needs, Address Economic Skills Gap, and Offer Transformative Chance at Degree for Massachusetts Adults 

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) President Pam Eddinger joined Governor Maura T. Healey on Thursday, August 24, to launch MassReconnect, the Healey administration’s new program establishing free community college for Massachusetts residents aged 25 and older, and awarded $100,000 to each of Massachusetts’ 15 community colleges to support the quick implementation of the program this fall. Governor Healey and President Eddinger were joined by Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, Senate President Karen Spilka, Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler, Commissioner of Higher Education Noe Ortega, and other community college presidents today at MassBay Community College’s Wellesley Campus. During the event, the Healey-Driscoll Administration highlighted the first MassReconnect students at MassBay, celebrating the impact the program is expected to have for students across the state.

President Eddinger celebrates Charlestown Marina’s Large Marina of the Year Award and naming of Pier 6 public space in honor of former U.S.S. Constitution Commander and Charlestown native Robert Gillen. 

When Ann and Chuck Lagasse, the owners of Charlestown Marina, received the Large Marina of the Year award from Marina Dock Age Magazine, they called Bunker Hill Community College.
