Bunker Hill Community College Hosts New England Transfer Conference

Friday, July 25, 2014

Representatives of 30 colleges and universities across New England assembled at Bunker Hill Community College on June 20, 2014, to discuss the agreements that govern the transfer of academic credits from one institution to another. Such agreements—called “articulation agreements”-- are particularly important to community college and other two-year college students, who transfer to four-year institutions if they wish to continue their education after earning an associate degree.

The conference, called “The Articulation Umbrella: Creating and Sustaining Successful Partnerships,” was hosted by BHCC under the auspices of the New England Transfer Association (NETA).  BHCC Director of Admissions and Enrollment Services Vanessa Whaley Rowley and NETA President Jude Tomasino welcomed guests to the gathering.

The event got underway with a round-table discussion with panelists Laura Douglass, Director of Professional Studies at Endicott College; Mary Dunn, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Salem State University; Susan Curry, Director of College Articulations at North Shore Community College; Diane Malley-Parcella, Bedford Transfer Counselor at Middlesex Community College; and Jane Fain, Lowell Transfer Counselor at Middlesex Community College.  A second panel focusing on best practices included Lori Pendleton, Director of Admissions at Charter Oak State College, and Kristin Turchetta, Student Service Associate at Johnson & Wales University.

Articulation agreements between institutions ensure that the classes a student takes at one college will receive credit at another college.  “These agreements are vital for our students as they plan their educational future,” said Vanessa Whaley Rowley, BHCC Director of Admissions and Enrollment Services, who chaired the event and led the group discussions. “We are pleased to host this important discussion at Bunker Hill Community College.”

The New England Transfer Association is a non-profit organization composed of transfer professionals from two- and four-year colleges and universities as well as other organizations with a stake in the transfer process. The organization is dedicated to improving the transfer process for students and to providing professional development opportunities for its members.
